New Trump Admin Hire Blames COVID-19 on Chinese People and George Soros
In April 2020, the Trump administration hired a new Assistant Secretary of Public Affairs for Health and Human Services, Michael Caputo, whose personal Twitter showed him repeatedly making racist and antisemitic statements, and spreading conspiracy theories about COVID-19. In addition to retweeting a post that referred to George Soros as “the real virus,” Caputo called economist David Rothschild an “inbred elitist sphincter whose family craves control,” invoking an antisemitic conspiracy about the Rothschilds.
UPDATED AS OF SEPTEMBER 16, 2020:
Caputo later deleted the tweets. In early September 2020, Media Matters published an exposé on Caputo, uncovering a podcast he hosted. In the podcast, Caputo could be heard making derogatory remarks similar to those he tweeted, and praising far-right figures like Milo Yianopoulos and Jack Posobiec. Caputo later deleted his Twitter account. On September 16, 2020, following a Facebook Live during which he repeated more conspiracies and accused the CDC of attacking Trump, Caputo announced that he would be taking a six-month leave of absence.
