Giuliani Says Jewish Donor George Soros Has a "Sick Background"
In an interview on Fox News’ The Story with Martha MacCallum, Donald Trump’s personal attorney Rudy Giuliani claimed George Soros is “intent on destroying our government for some sick reason of his that goes back to his sick background.”
George Soros is a Holocaust survivor and a Jewish philanthropist who donates to liberal causes. The political right frequently casts him as an international puppet master, drawing on ugly stereotypes and antisemitic conspiracy theories about a global Jewish cabal secretly controlling world affairs. On other occasions, Giuliani has claimed that Soros is “hardly a Jew,” and that he (Giuliani) is “more of a Jew than Soros.”
In a June 2020 radio interview with White House employee and member of a Hungarian Nazi-affiliated group Sebastian Gorka, Rudy Giuliani claimed that George Soros was responsible for “antifa riots” throughout the United States. In July of 2020, Giuliani claimed on his Youtube show that George Soros was the mastermind of a plan to undermine the American justice system by investing in “criminal-friendly, incompetent District Attorneys.”
Giuliani’s comments are reflective of an ethos that is widely held within both the Trump Administration and the broader Republican Party. As the 2020 Black Lives Matter uprising erupted across the country, conservative groups bought and deployed social media advertisements calling on authorities to “investigate George Soros for funding domestic terrorism and his decades-long corruption.”
Giuliani’s comments have elicited no condemnation from the Republican Party; on the contrary, they continue to be echoed by right-wing pundits and politicians.
